Women of Mosquito Joe: Michele Sommers - Mosquito Joe Franchise

If there is one thing we have learned it is that there are many misconceptions about women in the pest control industry! So while we could write a blog post about the pest control industry and why women are a good fit for Mosquito Joe, we thought there were a few people who could do a better job. In our blog series the Women of Mosquito Joe, we highlight the incredible women that are a part of the MoJo family and why it is no longer a man’s world!

This month we chatted with Michele Sommers of Mosquito Joe of Springfield, IL. Michele and her husband Jeff are no strangers to owning their own business. Together, they’ve been self-employed for 12 years running their own architecture practice since 2004. While Jeff’s background is in detail and design, Michele’s is in organization and business structure, so it’s no surprise she runs the show at Mosquito Joe. She is the owner/operator and wears every hat there is from answering phones to marketing and finances all the way to getting into the van and treating properties!  The services provided by Michele and her crew make sure Springfield, IL is itch free as well as adding a layer of defense for mosquito borne illness.

What motivated you to get involved with Mosquito Joe?

I got involved in Mosquito Joe because I loved the culture of the company. The focus on having fun outdoors was right up my alley. And the fact that it’s a seasonal business was perfect for me – I wanted to stay current with my skill set in business, but didn’t want to work year-round in a corporate job. It’s a win-win!

How would you describe the Mosquito Joe community?

I love the fact that I always have a support system at my fingertips. Whether it’s from the corporate side or from my fellow franchisees, I’m blessed to have friends and experts by my side. I also LOVE the support I receive from our customers! They’re always so happy to Share the MoJo with their friends. They love helping us grow our business!

What do you find empowering about your job?

I love the fact that I am able to impact my community in a positive way through my business.

There are often misconceptions around the pest control industry and in particular with women working in that industry. What are your thoughts on those?

Sitting at a desk all day every day can get very boring. I like that we have the ability to get out there and get our hands dirty if we want to. I’d actually like to get out there more often than I actually do. I love meeting our customers and seeing the excitement on their faces as we talk about helping them knock down their mosquito population. I love educating people on why it’s important to practice prevention and how they can play a part in mosquito control as well. Problem solving and education are a big part of this business. I love that!

What advice would you give a woman considering opening a Mosquito Joe business?

I’d say “go for it” – it’s very rewarding helping others create an outdoor environment that is protected and enjoyable for their families.

We’re so proud Michele and her family are a part of the Mosquito Joe family.
